<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>¿Por qué más que un festival? </b><br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<b>¿Qué sigue? </b><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxwYdwus9nD75aivZXBzzuKDlzc4GGOmBNcS4CKgKyvYvouM0Un46ztAkAAWaFIHkyrbfRVEWIao0Sa-n04M3CozhyT3pstFUafsOj5AYbtumy7MUma9mgMckZn-5lI4HZCBTvzLnFxRsk/s1600/DSC00336.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxwYdwus9nD75aivZXBzzuKDlzc4GGOmBNcS4CKgKyvYvouM0Un46ztAkAAWaFIHkyrbfRVEWIao0Sa-n04M3CozhyT3pstFUafsOj5AYbtumy7MUma9mgMckZn-5lI4HZCBTvzLnFxRsk/s400/DSC00336.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We're sorry that we've had the blog a bit abandoned, but the semester has gone by so freaking fast!! Anyway... here goes a post about an activity we did together with the guys from CSS and Cykelköket. CSS had done this event last year, so we decided to keep the good initiative alive and add a little more music to it. Cykelköket is a non profit organization that brings bike enthusiasts together to help and teach each other how to fix and maintain their bikes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; color: #666666; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #666666;"> So, the idea of the event is quite simple: We gather several bikes that have been abandoned by their owners and remain in the Student Housing Buildings cellars when they do their annual cleaning. Instead of dumping these bikes (as it use to happen) we collect them and bring them to the university's yard. Where, together with Cykelköket we provide tools and experienced people to help out in fixing the bikes. We did an open event for everybody to come, pick and fix a bike to take home. The only requirement was to sign up into the organizing groups, and for 50 Swedish crowns become members of both organizations for a year. The event was a huge success, unfortunately there were more people than bikes, but we hope to have more bikes to fix next year. All in all around 90 people went home pedaling on their newly fixed bikes, all to the balkan rhythms of a local band called Halkan Balkan.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #666666;"> Its a really simple activity to put together. It doesn't require a lot of money or anything, just motivation and will to learn and to have a good time. I hope more people imitate this type of activity that support biking in the city and repairing old bikes, rather than throwing them away to buy a new one.</span></div>

</div><div><br /><i>2. </div><div><br /><i>3. Cicloestacionamientos</i>. </div><div><br /><i>5. </div><div><br /><i>6. </div><div><br /><i>7. <br />Si estás en México D.F. y alrededores, puedes adquirir una bufanda como esta directamente de él: <br /><br />http://www.twitter.com/pazzofabian<br />https://www.facebook.com/pazzofabian<br /><br />--<br /><br />Meet Fabian Lozano, who has this very interesting project to share.<br />If you're in Mexico city or want to contact him, here there are his contacts:<br /><br />http://www.twitter.com/pazzofabian<br />https://www.facebook.com/pazzofabian<br /><br /><br /><iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/AJFdmXvVIDc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>Yenashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07130453472862992642noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6073095137715726779.post-77340704621728256322012-01-19T15:15:00.000-08:002012-01-19T16:01:47.702-08:00La muerte de la basura / The death of trash<div style="text-align: left;"><i>For english, scroll down!</i></div><div><br /></div><div>Noviembre en México es un mes muy colorido debido a la Fiesta del Día de Muertos (todos santos). </b><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>En términos generales</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Hello again, everyone! </b><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The winter holidays have been good for resting but also excellent to retrieve a lot of information that we'd love to share with you. For now I'll say that I've been to Mexico and the US, and it has been really interesting to go now with exploring eyes finding what these countries do (or at least the communities I've been to) regarding the dispose of solid waste, as well as public policies for environmental care. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>In a general way</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
From Mexico, I can say that public policies are not yet very developed and structured, people in general doesn't have information about how to separate, where to recycle what advantages it has to do it so, etc. BUT despite this, there are a lot of excellent recycling and environmental initiatives, creativity finds a great way of expressing when it comes to persons involved in environmental themes with enough information. These persons for sure understand the importance of taking care of what we dispose. I'll have the pleasure of sharing these projects, coming from creative and caring mexicans. But yet again, I'll also give some exposure at the failure of the public policies, in order to give them a thought and propose solutions. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In the US, I think policies are better, however, the american way of life is too rooted, people does consume industrial quantities of goods and services everyday, with their respective amount of waste. So I find truly important to make people think about the improvements they can make producing actually less waste and not only separating and recycling it. I find that there is a need to reflect in everyday actions, how to pollute less by choosing the right materials or the right actions: Is it better to use a disposable plate or to wash the dishes? Is it better to wash the dishes by hand or with the machine? Is it really necessary to flush the toilet every time we use it? Can we save electricity? And so on. On the other hand, there are some environmental projects, I'll share here one of a sustainable living unit, but then again, it will be good to question if maybe there are missing some previous steps, specially in education, because its application can't be possible without re-thinking the consumer lifestyle. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
By now, I can only say, to go back to publish here in our blog, that we thank a lot that you keep a track on us, that you leave your comments that help us to improve the contents. These trips personally have helped me a lot to evaluate in a better way what has to be shared with this community. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Hope to find your comments! </div>

What do you do with those old t-shirts that are so stained or full of holes that no one would want to use them? Well... you knit them.</div><div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #444444;">Here you can see a series of pictures of how we cut up several old t-shirts (6 in this case) to make a thread that we then crocheted into a bathroom floor mat. Please note that we cut the t-shirts following a spiral, in order to make the thread as long as possible, without a lot of sections. After you cut the t-shits it is recommendable to twist the thread to make it more homogeneous.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

This has not always been like that, however, as product-based economies grew, we have all been trapped in this consumist spiral that pushes us to buy and buy… with all kind of opinions and guilt feelings if we don’t do it. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">What is completely truth is that our planet is starting to show the consequences of these lifestyle of ours, and talking also of our private matters, also our pockets. A few weeks ago, during the Black Friday weekend, we shared a link which questions this and proposes the “White Friday”, I share again the link to use this reflection for the Christmas season:<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;"><a href="http://www.missminimalist.com/2011/11/white-friday-the-start-of-a-minimalist-holiday-season/"><b><span style="color:#254CC9;">http://www.missminimalist.com/2011/11/white-friday-the-start-of-a-minimalist-holiday-season/</span></b></a><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">The tradition of giving gifts comes back in time before the Christmas as we know it. But it was related to the ending of the sowing cycles, and in some cultures was a good omen to have some “new goods” for the house for starting the new cycle. But this “new goods” were almost always handcrafts or home-made products like blankets, seeds, furniture or a good banquet to share with the others and that were part of a rite. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">In the Christian era and not so long ago (related to industrialization) it was said that it was baby Jesus that brought gifts to children, a didactic activity that symbolised to be able to recieve god’s blessings. But again, in the beginning the gifts were part of the year crop, fruits, sweets, some clothing made by the mother, some little toy made by the father. The rest of the holidays focused in having the family gathered sharing the occasion. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">Nowadays, our society focuses their effort in buying gifts for all the family members. Stores usually prepare for the season with months in advance, offering sales for products out of season, or risky credit plans to get a debt for the rest of the next year, to buy products you don’t need with money you don’t have. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">Result: Families with huge debts in the beginning of the year. Gifts that are not always welcome. Holidays in which people is more concerned about giving and receiveing that sharing. Environmentally, overproduced goods that in most of the cases go straight to the trash bin, like all sorts of packaging or even the “unpleasant” gifts. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">We propose here to redesign the season experience in a sustainable way, and the first step is to avoid giving stuff whenever possible or the emotional creativity to give away intelligent stuff that won’t cost a lot and won’t overproduce. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">The base for this is to reconsider our own value as persons: Please stop thinking that people will have a bad opinion if we don’t give them something, in the end, relationships must be strenghtened all year round, and not a by a gift one day of the year. Let’s explain to the others our interest on consuming less and being more affective. Especially, let’s be rightfull and stop expecting to recieve gifts as well, we can ask for that, to have only good wishes. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">When it comes to our closer persons, we can do what I call “Affective gifts”: Things made by ourselves or that have a special value, and to give them heartedly to the ones we care about. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">Here I give some examples: <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">1. Letters or cards made by ourselves: In the Internet era, it is just touching to recieve a letter in which another person invested time, a good handstyle and even some art. TO make them use your creativity, recycled materials, vegetal colors, stamps, trimmings or whatever you want. You’ll be original and also very individual… <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">2. Recycling projects: In this blog we have shared some ideas to reuse textiles, for example. But there are a lot of ideas to make small useful things, starting from a recicled material. Jewelery, photo frames, notebooks, restyled furniture, don’t limit yourself, look in your closet and transform something in something else. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">3. Affectionate gifts: Give away something that is yours and that is special for you. I still remember one of my uncles, who, for space reasons, had to get rid of his mug collection. He chose those mugs that thought that could have a new good owner that appreciated them, and gave them to special persons. We who got one of those, we knew how special they were for what they meant for him. Do the same with your belongings, and feel the pleasure of letting go something your appreciate. Energetically, it has a great value to do it so. I feel so proud each time I see my niece wearing my favorite childhood sunglasses, they couldn’t have a better owner now. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">4. Special occasion voucher: The most valuable resource we have to give is our time. So you can make some vouchers for cinema, a nice dinner, a cool trip. If you are to spend money, do it in something you’ll enjoy and won’t loose, joyful experiences. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">5. IF you absolutely MUST buy something new, don’t be afraid of asking the options: At least you’ll know the gift will be used, that the person will like it. Get creative with wrappings, use a textile bag that can be reused instead of paper, or if you can, don’t use any wrapping at all. Remember that in the end, those fancy wrappings will turn in trash in no time. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi- font-family:"Trebuchet MS";mso-bidi-Trebuchet MS"; mso-ansi-language:ES-TRADfont-family:";font-size:13.0pt;color:#262626;">To all our readers here at Ecodiseño Existencial, we wish that you have a very happy end of year, that we keep promoting an affective and sustainable lifestyle. Even if we swim against the current for a while, in the future our children and our planet will be thankful for it. To that you add that I got a job, and the possibilities of posting about Göteborg's Sustainability Jam were going down the drain. So... this is as thorough as it gets. Sorry about that... but better some than none.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
So: The 28th to the 30th of October just passed there was a multi-location event called a Sustainability Jam. It is basically an open innovation lab where people could enroll and participate with other motivated strangers brainstorming and proposing ideas around Sustainability, focusing on the given topic of Playgrounds. Göteborg had such an event, with at least other 6 locations.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">You can read extensively about the event held in Göteborg at their blog, that was created simultaneously by dedicated collaborators. It has some posts in Swedish, but it manages to maintain a good "Swenglish" (Swedish-English) that allows for outsiders understanding. In that blog you find the videos, comments and thoughts that where popping up during the event:</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://sustainabilityjamgoteborg.wordpress.com/">http://sustainabilityjamgoteborg.wordpress.com/ </a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">But the overall purpose of a group of volunteering enthusiast to freely put down their weekend to meet others in order to do fun, but yet exhausting, work is to produce an outcome. What would that be? Propose some sort of working prototype on an idea that they managed to push forward with 48 hours of snappy teamwork and decision making. That outcome has all been posted up for safe keeping and public delight into the <a href="http://planet.globalsustainabilityjam.org/">Global Sustainability Jam webpage</a>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Unfortunately I have not had time to go into all the projects, just peeked into a few... but they look very promising. My fear is that in these times of over-saturated communication, these type of initiative get buried into oblivion. That would be a true shame. They are interesting ideas, put front for people to think on and hopefully further develop. Some groups had it in them to say, "Sure, I have time now to dedicate to this further.", some didn't. I personally do hope that the majority of these well intended projects can keep their momentum up and running. Thus taking the step further from thinking and talking about sustainability, to the proposing (done on that hectic weekend) to finally doing something.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">At least, gathering people and proposing solutions is doing. <span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: #444444;">(English version further down)</span></span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiozoBChcx7vCs1PqsO8cmnI7o1snATQ7RwJLW43oUY3mlnr3EMHBDz_gapX6R8wp6NGABMyjlS9Zu561R0hkSS-4003I52JXg_8qjpnDGoGKXrVQTxgxix3PQ0jg2LJHG_ulHmkjSf_JXZ/s1600/01.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;">
We spent last weekend in London. With my curiosity for waste handling I asked around and took some pictures. The answers I got filled me up with even more questions.</div>
<div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;">
I asked our hosts, in two of the places we stayed, how they deal with their trash. Amazingly enough, both friends said that they had no specific container provided from the city to deposit their recyclables in. Non the less, they still did household separation of recyclable waste, leaving out glass, plastic, cardboard and metal. Non of them separated organic waste, due to the bad smell this generates.</div>
<div style="color: #444444; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;">A pair of our friends said that when they had accumulated recyclables, they took them on bike to the closest recyclable container they knew. This was much more complicated than what they were used to living in their previous flat. There they would get the separated garbage taken directly from home. But at this new flat, since it is in a more commercial area, the municipal garbage collectors do not give that service. The other couple said they left all the bags out on the curb side for collection, recyclables and rubbish all alike. So, the question that rises is: Do those recyclables get recycled anyway? When they are stacked in a separate bag that is right next to the rubbish bag? Do the municipal waste workers recognize each bags content before tossing it into a defined compartment in the truck? I truly doubt it.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;">To confuse us even further, walking through the city we saw public waste bins with two sides: one for normal rubbish and one for recyclables. But all the recyclables fitted together in the same area, all mixed up. I found it impressive. Does this mean they further sort the recyclables? Is there a simple, effective, automated way to do this? Wouldn't it be better not to mix them in the first place? We also found big recycling containers, still all mixed. Apparently, if it's recycled in London, it's tossed all together.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #444444;">Other thing I saw that was interesting, was a container for small household electrical appliances. I couldn't manage a picture, but found a link to a bit more information <a href="http://www.hackney.gov.uk/recycling-recycling-banks.htm#small_electrical">here</a>.</span></div>

This is because in northern Europe the bicycle is very popular due to its low costs of maintenance, but specially because it is a completely clean transportation, free of any pollutive gas emissions. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; "><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; ">“Burn fat, not oil”, you can read in pro-bike campaigns. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; "><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; ">Due to the fact that it is expensive to have a car (purchase, maintenance, fuel and taxes) and th public policies have given priority to the public transportation, the bicycle is commonly used in northern Europe. From the urban design it is contemplated that cities must have an efficient traffic distribution, so public transportation -eventhough it is also expensive- has the preference in the transport circulation. Next go pedestrians, then bikes and finally cars. Often it is hard to drive in the biggest cities because they give the cars different routes than the main ones. Parking spaces are also expensive. All of this is made so people will use less and less the car. In some cities, like downtown Stockholm, they can even apply an extra tax for driving in some of the most crowded areas. Then people restricts the use of cars when is really necessary, choosing public transportation (very well equipped subways, trams, buses, boats and trains) or the bicycle. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; "><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; ">The first thing that caught my attention in Sweden is how well one can reach destinations by bike. In most of the streets there is a bicycle lane, understood this as a special space for bike transportation, not a sports <b>but a urban facility. </b></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; "><b><br /></b></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; ">The streets are arranged so pedestrians know where to walk, bikes were to pass, and the vehicle area is often divided for public transport and particular cars. Even in peak hours, traffic is moving along, because everyone know were is their space and who goes first, decreasing accidents and decreasing the time that people is in a traffic jam. As public transport has the preference over the other kinds of vehicles, is assured that most of the people will be moved away from the traffic quickly. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; "><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; ">Each lane or space has their own signs. So everyone can identify which one to use. You can see that in the video we made. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; "><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; ">Scandinavia (Sweden Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland) along with Holland and Germany are the countries that most incentivate the use of the bicycle as an urban transport in many ways, beginning with the taxes and costs that you save, but also culturally and socially: Here, using a bike is not the same as being "poor", there is a lot of design development for urban bikes, and the image of the persons that use the bike is identified more with clever people that like to move fast and green. Therefore bikes are actually "democratizing" society: It does'nt matter that you ride a 10,000 crowns bike, <b>you're still sweating next to the one</b> that bought his bike second hand. This also increases the feeling of being moving in an agile and free way through the city, with a low environmental impact. Women in a suit, elderly, children by themselves or in a special chair in their parents' bike, people that go to school, office, supermarket. A wide public. And most of the cars will yield for them.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; "><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; ">The biking culture has also found a great ally in design that promotes and backs up the activity: there are helmets, reflective signs, raincoats for the bikers; locks, baskets, lights, bells, bags and all kind of accesories for the bikes. A whole culture of every-day, safe and fun use of the bicycle. For all tastes and budgets. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; "><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; ">In this video you'll see that it is actually very safe to interact with bikes, both for pedestrians and bikers. Also that when building the lanes there are no steep slopes, thinking of the people that will be riding them. The overall system has planned the combined use of different vehicles, so there are big parking spaces for bicycles and rental bikes. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; "><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Helvetica;">Take a look at the video and we hope we can receive your comments. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; "></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-TRAD" style="font-family:Helvetica;"><o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-TRAD" style="font-family:Helvetica;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/g2vwpqWeRUc" width="560"></iframe></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:Helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; color: rgb(102, 102, 102); ">We biked more or less 3.1 kms making this video!

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="ES-TRAD" style="font-family: Helvetica;"></span></div>

<span lang="ES-TRAD" style="font-family: Helvetica;"></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="ES-TRAD" style="font-family: Helvetica;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="ES-TRAD" style="font-family: Helvetica;">“Burn fat, not oil” rezan los slogans de campañas pro-ciclistas: Quema grasa, no gasolina. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

So, here is our first video where we talk about how it is to use a bike as transportation in a city like Gothemburg (or Göteborg, like the locals call it).</div>
<div style="color: #666666; text-align: justify;">
As you may suspect, it's pretty damned nice! </div>
<div style="color: #666666; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #666666; text-align: justify;">
Our idea is to show you guys what urban infrastructure is needed for biking to be nice. So, here we start with the basic: Bikes and pedestrian have preference over cars at marked intersections.</div>
<div style="color: #666666; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #666666; text-align: justify;">
This was filmed in Korsvägen which is considered to be a big traffic intersection in the city. The map in the end of the post shows where I was standing when we shot the video, in relation to the transport hub area. Notice how nice and clear the pedestrian crossings can be seen in the google map!<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: center;">

We are lucky enough to have friends around the world. One of our friends, Chinmay Pendakar, was kind enough to do a house video to show how garbage is handled at his parents place in Pune, India.</div>
<div style="color: #666666; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #666666; text-align: justify;">
We hope this raises questions, suggestions and motivates you all to send us your own video showing how domestic waste is handled around the world.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="color: #666666;">
Continuing with different approaches of how to handle waste, we want to show you what a Japanese company called <a href="http://www.blest.co.jp/seihin-english.html">Blest</a> has been doing for the last years.</div>
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/R-Lg_kvLaAM" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
<div style="color: #666666;">
Akinori Ito, CEO of Blest, has spent these last years teaching people around the world the about the value discarded plastic has, with his machine that converts plastic into oil. It sounds incredible, but has hold up to the skeptics query. The fantastic thing about it, is that running on 1kWh it converts roughly one kilogram of plastic into a liter of unrefined oil, in some 3 hours. The result is a leftover energetic surplus of about 7kWh in the form of oil.</div>
<div style="color: #666666;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #666666;">
This, as any interesting invention, provokes many questions. Our main doubt around this is: Are we so addicted to oil? Would it not be better to keep plastics in a closed plastic cycle?</div>
<div style="color: #666666;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #666666;">
Clearly this invention is helpful as a teaching tool. It is also a very desirable alternative for plastic disposal, instead of landfilling or wastefully burning it. It is a very relevant object in a world where recycling doesn't begin to cover our plastic disposal rate. </div>
<div style="color: #666666;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #666666;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

Continuing with the "Design for Food" posts, today we will comment the Parasite Farm. It is a design developed by <a href="http://nilsferber.de/index.html">Nils Ferber</a> and <a href="http://charlottedieckmann.de/en/">Charlotte Dieckmann</a> in a seminar called <span style="color: #99cc00;"><a href="http://agriculture.soup.io/"><span style="color: #99cc00;">“Agriculture and the City”</span></a></span> held by Harald Gründl.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://nilsferber.de/kitchen-composter.html">Parasite Farm</a> is not as massive as the Window Farm project if you may, but includes something essential to my
point of view: The intention of closing the nutrient cycle around what we
eat. This system does not only allow you to grow your own edible plants in your apartment, it also lets you produce your own nutrient rich soil, using
your food scrapings.<br />
<br />
The system consists of two main
elements: A vermi-composter and illuminated plant boxes that fit into any bookcase. Why illuminated bookcase boxes instead of window sills? They said: <br />
<span style="color: #444444;">"Of course you could just put them on your balcony or window sills. That
would probably work even better than artificial illumination. But we
tried to develop a concept that works independently from outdoor space
and sunlight. We wanted to show that composting food scraps and growing
vegetables is possible even within your apartment or flat."</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_Z8AD1UYTmnu4Rs8pFOYDp3yv-5ckgNQJodG1u52DwaFLUCnR1UrIokwYoPlh5W2LmOcbzTkbAS6tHhLaKRCGTa_PmMXXb8nyt_KM9YUAvk6EHOeFMlXd8R3PTAiDsSx45W20Ma-xbwLU/s1600/Scene.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_Z8AD1UYTmnu4Rs8pFOYDp3yv-5ckgNQJodG1u52DwaFLUCnR1UrIokwYoPlh5W2LmOcbzTkbAS6tHhLaKRCGTa_PmMXXb8nyt_KM9YUAvk6EHOeFMlXd8R3PTAiDsSx45W20Ma-xbwLU/s640/Scene.jpg" width="470" /></a></div>

<div style="color: black; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"> Picture from <a href="http://andregiesemann.com/">Alexander Giesemann</a></span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
The most interesting component is the vermi-composter. It hangs from your kitchen table, and has a sliding cutting board as a lid. It houses some tiger worms and other micro-organisms that feed off your organic waste, producing
nutrient rich soil to feed your plants with. The container separates the soil from the liquid fertilizer (consisting mainly of water held in the vegetables), which you can later mix into the water you give the plants. The composter also includes a small fly trap to avoid small fruit flies invading your kitchen. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Image from <a href="http://charlottedieckmann.de/en/parasite-farm/">Charlotte Dieckmann</a></span></div>
<br />
This part of the project is what raises the most questions:<br />
First of all: Does it smell horrible?<br />
Apparently not. They say that it smells like humid forest soil, that when your standing with it in the kitchen people hardly notice the smell. It is clearly not comparable to decomposing organic waste.<br />
<br />
Then other use related questions we asked: Do you have to buy worms for it every now and then? Or, do you have to get rid of excessive worms, maybe?<br />
<div style="color: #444444;">
"No,
you normally start with about 500-1000 worms but if these worms will
find good conditions in your vermicompost-container the population will
slowly grow and adapt to the amount of nutrients that is available. And
just like in nature the population will stabilize after a while on a
level that is compatible with its environment."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Has this prototype been used by someone for some prolonged time period?</div>
<div>
If so: What is the ratio between the compost you produce, compared to
what is needed by the plants? What is the ratio between the liquid fertilizer produced and what the plants need?<br />
<span style="color: #444444;">"I
am testing the system in everyday life at the moment but too little
time has passed to make final statements yet. But normally you would
start with more or less filled plant boxes and add fertilizer and humus
soil from time to time until you eventually have to remove excessive
soil or add more plant boxes. But the ratios depend very much on how
intensive you use the vermicompost, what kind of plants you grow and
what kind of food scraps you put in..."</span></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="color: #444444;"><span style="color: black;">This is one product I would love to see available in the market. Maybe not because it will be able to process all our organic waste (I don't think people will grow that many plants in their flats) but because it helps us recall the importance of closing cycles in an organic way. After all, you are what you eat, no?</span> </span></div>

One interesting and recurrent idea these days is to try to grow your own food, even though you may live in a small apartment in the middle of a large city. We commented a bit about this in the <a href="http://ecodisenoexistencial.blogspot.com/2011/08/diy-can-you-do-sustainable-future.html">DIY post</a>, but I believe it needs some more looking into.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To do that, more than theorize and reflect about how much more sustainable growing your own food can be, we'll look into two existing designs that help you do this: the <a href="http://www.windowfarms.org/">Windowfarms</a> (this post) and the <a href="http://nilsferber.de/kitchen-composter.html">Parasite Farm</a> (next post).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Window farms is an open community that started with some people in New York that decided to grow their own vegetables on their apartment windows. To do this they came up with a vertical hydroponic planting system that uses a small water pump, or air pump to circulate the water and nutrients needed for the plants. They started promoting this with an open Internet community where users can share their experiences and ask questions to each other. The project started in 2009 with the help of a Kickstarter fund, and has gone viral since then. Now they make window farm kits that they sell through Internet while they still keep the on-line community active and growing, as they say, one window at a time.<br />

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are many good things to say about this initiative, but my main critiques is the need of an electric pump. There are some window-farmers that don't use pumps and have commented this on the community page. Still the problem seems to be how to deliver the needed amount of oxygen in the water without the need of using electricity. They are all open for suggestions on this topic, so good ideas are very welcome.<br />

<br /><div style="text-align: left;"><i>
</div><div style="text-align: center;">

<br /></div><div><div style="text-align: left; ">In our past publication we show the way in which the domestic trash is disposed in Sweden and specifically in the Region of Västra Götalands, in western Sweden, where the city of Göteborg is. </div><div style="text-align: left; ">
<br /></div><div style="text-align: left; ">As you could see here, the infrastructure makes it easy to sort out the trash, but there is also a wide information structure that provides all the knowledge a person needs in order to do it right. In the video, we show the information poster that is beside the recycling containers area. </div><div>Here people can see which is the place for each thing and, occasionaly, if they have a different kind of trash, check how it is disposed. </div><div>
<br /></div><div>It is important to mention that all of this work is made by <a href="http://www.renova.se/">Renova</a>, a company owned byt he city of Göteborg plus 11 other municipalities. It is one of the most clean and efficient processing trash companies in Europe. </div><div>
<br /></div><div>All the material shown here has the only purpose of inform to our readers the activities and contents produced by this company. If you want to know more details you can check the <a href="http://www.renova.se/in-english/information-material/">english version of Renova website. </a></div><div>
<br /></div><div>So we're presenting the translated guides as templates, if you want to use them at home you can adapt them, search for images and design your own symbology, and even add the information of your local Collector Service. </div><div>
