Taller de arreglo y regalo de Bicicletas / Bike fixing give away day

Lamento que hayamos tenido el blog tan abandonado... pero el semestre se nos ha pasado volando. De todas maneras han pasado hartas cosas y hay varias cosas que contarles. 

Hoy les voy a contar de un evento que armamos con los cabros del CSS (Chalmers Students for Sustainability) y los de Cykelköket. El año pasado CSS ya había hecho un evento similar, y este año lo repetimos y añadimos cosillas. Cykelköket es una asociación sin fines de lucro que pretende enseñarle a la gente como arreglar sus bicicletas en casa. Tienen un taller que abren una vez a la semana para reunir a ciclistas entusiastas que quieren compartir sus experiencias y conocimiento.

La idea es bien simple: En edificios para estudiantes, cada año, cuando se hace limpieza de las bodegas, quedan botadas varias bicicletas. Normalmente requieren reparación o cambiarle algunas piezas, pero fueron abandonadas por sus dueños y normalmente eran botadas como chatarra. La idea es recolectar todas estas bicicletas, y juntarlas en el patio de la universidad. Luego con ayuda de un taller de reparación, en este caso, una asociación llamada Cykelköket (Cocina de Bicicleta), tenemos herramientas a disposición y ayuda de gente que sabe como reparar bicicletas. Hicimos un evento abierto a todo publico para que vengan a elegir y reparar una bicicleta a elección para que se la lleven a la casa. El único requisito era subsribirse a la lista de las asociaciones organizadoras, y por 50 coronas suecas pasar a ser miembros de ambas organizaciones por un año. El evento fue un éxtio, y si bien casi todas las 90 bicicletas se fueron arregladas y con nuevos dueños, hubo varia gente que quería una bicicleta, pero que no alcanzó a recibir una. Esperamos para el proximo año tener más bicicletas que regalar. Para amenizar la espera en la larga cola y el tiempo que uno se toma en arreglar una bicicleta trajimos a una banda local que toca musica balkan, llamada Halkan Balkan.

Asi que, les dejamos este ejemplo de actividad, que no requiere de mucha plata, solo tiempo y ganas de aprender y pasarlo bien. Ojalá se motiven y hagan algo similar en sus ciudades.  We're sorry that we've had the blog a bit abandoned, but the semester has gone by so freaking fast!! Anyway... here goes a post about an activity we did together with the guys from CSS and Cykelköket. CSS had done this event last year, so we decided to keep the good initiative alive and add a little more music to it. Cykelköket is a non profit organization that brings bike enthusiasts together to help and teach each other how to fix and maintain their bikes.

 So, the idea of the event is quite simple: We gather several bikes that have been abandoned by their owners and remain in the Student Housing Buildings cellars when they do their annual cleaning. Instead of dumping these bikes (as it use to happen) we collect them and bring them to the university's yard. Where, together with Cykelköket we provide tools and experienced people to help out in fixing the bikes. We did an open event for everybody to come, pick and fix a bike to take home. The only requirement was to sign up into the organizing groups, and for 50 Swedish crowns become members of both organizations for a year. The event was a huge success, unfortunately there were more people than bikes, but we hope to have more bikes to fix next year. All in all around 90 people went home pedaling on their newly fixed bikes, all to the balkan rhythms of a local band called Halkan Balkan.

Its a really simple activity to put together. It doesn't require a lot of money or anything, just motivation and will to learn and to have a good time. I hope more people imitate this type of activity that support biking in the city and repairing old bikes, rather than throwing them away to buy a new one.
